Marriage and money: getting on the same page

April 19, 2015 by Tommy Leave a Comment

Marriage is a courageous and commendable step forward in any relationship. It is a bond of confidence and assurance between the two. However, it may also be a sensitive issue for many. Several cases where a marriage dissolves has roots to money-related bothers. Couples often find it challenging to manage money issues as they go into the state of marriage. Arguments over cash and credit cards can turn into bigger conflicts, and it’s about time that couples start addressing the problems as soon as they appear.

Start well

Interestingly, many marriages see a troubled start to their promising journey together- courtesy lavish wedding ceremonies and honeymoons. Let’s get it straight. There is nothing wrong in starting it big, with a bang: except when you can’t simply afford it. The idea is not to fall prey to the temptation of believing that anything could be afforded later on. Being moderate here might mean years of great parties and travelling together.

Plan and Budget

Planning is a tried and tested way to solve many potential problems. To begin with, set goals which are realistic and achievable. However, being too lenient on your financial capabilities can often lead to overly “expensive” budgets. If you are good at budgeting, it will be wiser to consider future expenses as well e.g. education of children, retirement plans etc. Not only this is plainly helpful in financial context, it will also help strengthen the bond of togetherness between the couple.

More togetherness: More communication

Do not fuss over the actions of other- even if it was clearly a mistake. A student loan in past by the spouse might be impacting your financial health today, but look ahead to get over it together. Similarly, try to share your financial resources even when the expense is supposedly made by the other. “I and you” attitude will lead to conflicts. Similarly, speak out the matters with each other. Some people tend to take in too much before venting it out all- and in a devastating manner. If you do not like how your spouse is spending a lot on weekend house parties- share your dissatisfaction. If you have played your part to be considerate, you could expect them to show heed to your concerns.

Make sessions to talk about it instead of day and night talk

Finance should not ruin your beautiful dinner or bed time. Neither should it be talked about 24/7. This can make even the most loving couples go fight over little issues. Instead of talking in small bits, assign a comparatively longer session to deal with money matters. Everything relating to expenses, revenues and budgets should be discussed in these meet-ups.

Being little smart and organized, couples can ensure a trouble-free marriage-life when it comes to money concerns. Should the problems arise, they could easily be worked out if both sit and ponder together. Surely, money issues can be taken well along to lead a successful, happy marriage life.
